to find cure for disease

PRESQUE ISLE — Adam MacDonald is asking friends, family and even strangers to help him in his Fight Against Duchenne — a form of muscular dystrophy he’s been battling his entire life.

This marks the fourth year MacDonald has turned his birthday into a fundraiser, requesting cash donations rather than gifts in hopes of finding a cure for the disease that primarily affects boys and causes progressive loss of mobility and use of limbs as muscle deteriorates.

“Adam’s goal is to raise $2,700; that’s $100 for each year he’s been alive. As of Tuesday, he’s raised nearly $1,700, with five more days to reach his goal,” said his mother, Cheryl Markey.

MacDonald has set midnight on his birthday, Oct. 20, as the deadline to raise the $2,700.

Markey said she and MacDonald have been collecting donations, most of them for $27 each — representative of MacDonald’s 27th birthday, which is Saturday.

“A special birthday celebration and auction are planned for Sunday, Oct. 21, at The Crow’s Nest on Maysville St. in Presque Isle,” said Markey.

Donations will be taken at the door for the meal and for participants to enjoy some birthday cake with MacDonald. The event begins at 4 p.m.

“We have many awesome auction items, including tickets to see the Portland Sea Dogs and the Maine Black Bears hockey team, jewelry and much more,” said Markey.
