LIMESTONE — During the 59th annual convention for the National Association for Gifted Children held Nov. 15-19 in Denver. Executive Director of the Maine School of Science and Mathematics Luke Shorty was selected to join the National Consortium of Specialized Secondary Schools in Math, Science and Technologies National Board.

“The board consists of specialized science, technology, engineering and math schools from all over the country and is made up of a smorgasbord of STEM school models, including residential STEM schools such as MSSM,” Shorty said. “I’m very glad to serve and that MSSM is being recognized as an important voice and contributor to the national conversation about STEM schools.”

Opened in 1995, MSSM is a tuition-free, public, residential high school that enrolls students from across the state and serves over 500 students each year through its academic and summer offerings. The school provides high school students a rigorous, student-centered curriculum that emphasizes the connections between math, science and humanities, and culminates in opportunities for authentic research.

Summer camps conducted by MSSSM inspire Maine middle school students to explore their passions for science, math, engineering and technology. MSSM also provides professional development opportunities for teachers throughout the state.

In 2012 U.S. News and World Report ranked MSSM the 38th best high school out of nearly 22,000 public high schools nationwide, and the ninth best magnet school.

MSSM is currently accepting applications for the 2013-14 school year. For more information about MSSM, please visit the school’s website at www.mssm.org, or contact the Admissions Office at 325-3303.
