It was opening night of the basketball season last Friday, with several games on tap.
The Houlton Shiretowners traveled to Madawaska where they raced away with a 81-26 victory behind Nick Guiod’s 17 points; Kyle Bouchard and Kole Buzzeo’s 12 each and Dan Howe’s 10.
In the opening game on Friday, the Lady Shires raced away from Madawaska, 58-18. Senior Marina Cameron tossed in a game-high 14 points to lead Houlton, while Bre Longstaff netted 11, Tori Hanson, 10 and freshman Katie Condon nine. Rounding out the Houlton scoring were: Natalie Hill, four points; Alana Pratt, Samantha Keegan, Emily Mooers, Tanika Toby and Megan Collett, two points apiece.

REBOUND — Southern Aroostook’s Will McGary, No. 23, and teammate Mason Caron both go strong for a rebound in last Friday night’s game in Dyer Brook against Central Aroostook. The Panthers fell in their home opener, 44-32.
Leading scorer for Madawaska was Kelley Dugal with six points.
The Lady Shires opened the game with an 18-2 lead and held Madawaska scoreless in the second period for a comfortable, 31-2 halftime advantage.
In Dyer Brook, the Southern Aroostook Warriors fell to Central Aroostook, 44-32. The game was tight through first-half action with Central Aroostook holding a 20-18 halftime lead before opening the margin to 32-22 after three.
Chandler Brewer led the Panthers with 19 points, while Steve Decker dropped in 10 more. Zack McClung had seven points.
For Bill McAvoy’s Warriors, Jesse Boulier turned in 19 points, along with Cameron Landry’s eight points and Will McGary’s four.
On Saturday, the Fort Fairfield Tigers outscored the visiting Katahdin Cougar girls 20-6 in the third quarter to break open the game for a 51-31 win.
Megan Merry led Katahdin with 12 points, while Morgan Livezey tossed in seven. Other scorers were Ashley Randall, six; Lizzie Knowles, four and Michelle Birmingham, two.
For the Tigers, Sydney Churchill scored 17 points, while Whitney McNamee netted 10 more.
The Easton girls rolled by host East Grand, 50-29, in Danforth last Saturday, but it took the Bears until the fourth quarter to do so. The Bears outscored the Vikings, 20-2 in the final stanza to clinch the win.

Elisha Farley scored 11 points for East Grand.
Hanna Ferris led Easton with 15 points.
In the boys game, Easton took a 67-34 win over the Vikings, as Hunter Turner tossed in 24 points and Jared Hafford added 16, including four 3-pointers. Connor Burtt added eight more.
The Vikings were close at halftime, 33-25, but the Bears pulled away in the second half.
Logan Crone was team-high scorer for East Grand with 12 points, while Kenny Winiarksi and Alex Stoddard netted eight and five points, respectively.
In Woodland, the Southern Aroostook girls exploded for a 50-26 victory behind Sable Altvater’s 20 point-effort. Jessica Tucker added14 more for the winners.
For Woodland, Devon Perkins connected for seven points.
