Quilt raffle
Debbie Bird of Orono, at right, was the winner of the Crouseville Community Playground Committee raffle. Here she receives the quilt from its creator, Ruth Flewelling.
The Crouseville Community Playground Committee concluded its second raffle this fall on Dec. 1. This raffle featured a beautiful handmade quilt donated by Ruth Flewelling. Present for the drawing were committee members Dwayne Conley, Herman Belanger and Fred Flewelling, as well as Bill and Ruth Flewelling. The winning ticket was purchased by Debbie Bird of Orono.
In addition to the raffles held this fall, the project received $1,000 in grants from the Washburn Health Center and the Crouseville Advent Christian Church, and a $2,000 grant from the Aroostook County Fund of the Maine Community Foundation. This all has helped to move the committee closer to its goal of restoring the Milford Libby Memorial Playground and Lori Corey Memorial Basketball Court in Crouseville.
Anyone wishing to make a tax-deductible donation directly to the playground project may call Patsy Flewelling at 455-4076 or any of the committee members for more information.
Student of the Month
Olivia Doody is Washburn High School’s student of the month for December. Olivia is the Senior Class president. You may recognize her from the basketball court where she is the co-captain with Carmen Bragg this year, or from the soccer field where she was a part of the first girls’ team ever to make it to the state play-off. She is also a part of the volleyball team and the manager for the cross-country team. In spite of her exhausting schedule, she has managed to work hard at calculus and greatly improved her grade.
Santa Claus visits
BROTHERS VISIT SANTA — Brothers Damien and Isiah Dumont of Washburn visit with Santa Claus at the gazebo on Main Street in Washburn.
On Saturday, Dec. 8, Santa Claus made a special visit to Washburn. Escorted by the Washburn Fire Department, Santa toured around Washburn riding on the back of a fire engine, waving to everyone as he passed. He then stopped at the gazebo on Main Street. There was a small bonfire going and yummy hot chocolate provided by Tim Hortons. Santa was met by many of Washburn’s children who were able to visit with him and share their wishes for Christmas; each child also received a goody bag from the Washburn Fire Department.
