Adam Flynn became Presque Isle’s newest member of the 100-point club, hitting the milestone while capping off a six-point performance in a 14-1 win over Old Town Jan. 25 at Alfond Arena on the UM-Orono campus.
Despite missing half of last year with an injury, Flynn became the eighth player in the 21-year history of PIHS hockey to rack up triple digits in points. The others are current assistant coach Darren Carlisle, Doug Carlisle, Brandon Daigle, Brennan Shaw, Dylan Collins, Isaac LaJoie and Connor Shaw.
“Adam has been blessed to play with some very gifted players, including three prior 100-point clubbers,” said his father and coach, Carl Flynn. “I think he has learned from them the art of scoring and in his younger years, his job was to feed them the puck and let them score, for which he collected the assists that helped get him to this plateau.”
Carl Flynn added that Darren Carlisle, the Wildcats’ all-time leading scorer, has also made a huge impact through his coaching.
Flynn, who resides in Caribou, was also named his school’s first recipient of the Hobey Baker Character Award.
The Maine Interscholastic Hockey Coaches Association, in conjunction with the Hobey Baker Foundation, is hosting Maine’s first Hobey Baker High School Character Award program.
The awards are given annually to one high school senior from each participating boys/girls hockey program in the state and recognizes and rewards student-athletes for displaying exemplary character and sportsmanship in their schools and communities.
The Hobey Baker High School Character Award is an extension of the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top collegiate ice hockey player.
Hockey coaches from schools across the state have selected one member of their team to receive this honor. Selected students exemplify the spirit, sportsmanship and character represented by the collegiate award through their attitude, work ethic, unselfishness, and “coachability.”
“The spirit of the 2013 Hobey Baker High School Character Award is to acknowledge that it takes more than hockey skill to develop great student – athletes and the development of exemplary character and sportsmanship in our high school hockey players is a vitally important aspect of the student-athlete experience,” said Mike Tausek, Maine State Director of the Hobey Baker Character Award Program. “We are honored to participate in this important award and recognize these outstanding high school students in Maine as we believe that character builds excellence.”
