County players finalists for award
PORTLAND — The Maine Association of Basketball Coaches (MABC) and local Maine McDonald’s owner/operators announced the six finalists for the 2013 Mr. and Miss Basketball Awards. Among the finalists are a pair of players from central Aroostook County — Chandler Guerrette of Presque Isle and Mitchell Worcester of Washburn.
Guerrette scored 33 points in her team’s win over Lake Region Friday in the Class B state championship game played at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland. A four-year starter, she averaged 15.2 points, 3.4 steals and 3.2 assists this past season. She was named co-player of the year in the Big East Conference and was the most valuable player of the Eastern Maine Class B Tournament each of the past two seasons.
Worcester averaged over 30 points per game this past season for the Beavers, who went 17-1 during the regular season and advanced to the EM semifinals before they were defeated by Central Aroostook. Worcester, who also led Washburn in rebounds, assists and steals, scored 50-plus points twice during the season. He is now the school’s all-time leading scorer and also became one of a handful of Maine high school basketball players to eclipse 2,000 points during a career.
Other finalists selected for the title of Miss Maine Basketball 2013 are Kristen Anderson of Leavitt Area High School, and Martha Veroneau of Waynflete School.
Other finalists selected for Mr. Maine Basketball 2013 are Garet Beal of Jonesport-Beals High School and John Murray of Medomak Valley High School.
The six finalists will be honored at the Maine McDonald’s High School Senior All-Star Awards Banquet on Friday, March 8 at Husson University in Bangor. Mr. and Miss Maine Basketball will be announced as well. The award, the state’s highest basketball honor, recognizes players’ performances on the court as well as their contributions to their team and basketball in Maine.
