Organizations partner for indoor yard sale
PRESQUE ISLE — The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s men’s and women’s cross country teams and Presque Isle Historical Society are partnering to offer area residents a chance to get a jump start on that spring cleaning – or perhaps to find a treasure.
As a joint fundraising event, the groups will host an indoor yard sale on Saturday, March 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, March 31 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The event will be held in Wieden Gymnasium in Wieden Hall on the UMPI campus. Admission is free for shoppers. Anyone wishing to have a booth space must complete the contract and forward with payment in full by a March 15 deadline.
Vendor contracts and rules, and parking/unloading maps can be downloaded at www.umpi.edu/indooryardsalecontract and www.umpi.edu/indooryardsalemap. Parking for the event will be available in the library parking lot, the lot by the tennis courts and the north parking lot to the east of Gentile Hall.
“Some might think that the partnership between these groups is an unusual combination, but it is not the first time we have partnered for an event. UMPI cross country coach Chris Smith developed and directed the Sesquicentennial 5K Race for us in 2009. He is also a member of the Historical Society – and it doesn’t hurt that he is my husband. Both groups were looking for a new fundraising event in the spring and this was a good fit,” says Kim Smith of the Presque Isle Historical Society. “As a non-profit, we are always looking for new ways to introduce our organization and raise funds to continue to offer our programs and services.”
Coach Smith has been working to build a track and field club at UMPI for a couple of years now. As with many sporting clubs, funding is always an issue.
“The funds raised from this event will go towards out-of-state travel expense for track and field meets. The conference in which we compete requires quite a bit of traveling for us,” he said. “This will help defray the costs and give our student athletes more competitive experience.”
