All-star game gives players final chance to shine

    CARIBOU — Aroostook County’s top senior basketball players had their season extended as they participated in the annual Aroostook County All-Star Basketball Classic, held at Caribou High School March 5.
    Players were chosen by a selection committee made up of school administrators and members of the media.
    In the girls’ game, Candy Cane Pink defeated Iris Blue, 66-52.

    Chandler Guerrette of Presque Isle scored 15 points for the winners, while Megan Ireland of Presque Isle and Kayla Cushman of Central Aroostook scored 11 each. Karlee Bernier of Presque Isle netted eight points, while Carla Halvorson of Easton and Olivia Doody of Washburn had seven each. Kayla Cote of Ashland scored three points and Sydney Churchill of Fort Fairfield and Kelly Dugal of Madawaska two each. Daniele Pelkey of Limestone-MSSM, a late replacement for Meredith Stewart of Presque Isle, who missed the game due to injury, played but did not score.
    Leading Iris Blue was Alexa Massey of Caribou, who had 14 points. Tori Hanson of Houlton was also in double figures with 10. Tallying six points apiece were Abby Bouchard of Houlton, Mariah Wiley of Hodgdon and Megan Merry of Katahdin. Alexis Desjardins of Fort Kent posted four, while Rebecca McDougal of Caribou, Lacey McQuarrie of Hodgdon  and Marina Cameron of Houlton added two apiece. Desirae Dubois of Southern Aroostook played but did not figure in the scoring.
    The boys’ contest that followed saw Cherry Red score a 94-84 victory over Royal Blue.
    Five players reached double digits for the victors. Mitchell Worcester of Washburn led the charge with 23 points. Stephen Andrew Lewis of Fort Fairfield had 18, Joe Stiles of Central Aroostook and Josh Hudson of Hodgdon 14 each and Nick Lunn of Hodgdon 10. Devon Logie of Hodgdon had six, Steven Decker of Central Aroostook three and Dan Swallow of Houlton, Jesse Boulier of Southern Aroostook and Nick Bragg of Washburn two apiece.

    For Royal Blue, the top scorer was Colton Bivighouse of Katahdin with 17 points. Tyler Brooks of Presque Isle and Jared Hafford of Easton had 12 each and Charlie Nadeau of Fort Kent totaled 10. Nate Tucker of Limestone-MSSM tossed in eight, Jonah Stephenson of Presque Isle seven and Marc Lajoie of Van Buren and Devin Berkoski of Caribou six each. Tyler Levesque of Ashland and Aaron Thibeault of Madawaska tallied two points each.
    Serving as coaches were former varsity coaches Tom Berry of Southern Aroostook, Ron Ericson of Washburn, Mike Fogarty of Houlton and Larry Worcester of Washburn. The officials were John Hedman, Bob Stedt, Dan Girardin, Jeff Stephenson, Greg Shaw and David Day, all representing IAABO Board 150.
    Providing entertainment at halftime of both games was the Caribou-based Maine Dance Academy.
    County Physical Therapy sponsored the event. Proceeds benefited the Aroostook League scholar-athlete scholarship program.
