McDonald’s senior basketball contests

BANGOR — Teams from the East earned bragging rights in Saturday’s Maine McDonald’s High School Senior All-Star Basketball Games, held at Husson University.

The East captured wins in three of the four divisions, and local players turned in strong individual performances in their contests.
The boys’ C-D game went to the East, 113-100, behind the newly-crowned Maine Mr. Basketball, Garet Beal of Jonesport-Beals, who netted 35 points. Washburn’s Mitchell Worcester, a Mr. Basketball semifinalist, drained five three-point field goals and finished with 25 points.
Stephen Andrew Lewis of Fort Fairfield tossed in 13 and Colton Bivighouse of Katahdin added 12. Josh Hudson of Hodgdon notched six points in the win.
The West claimed its lone victory of the day in the boys’ A-B game by a score of 112-89. York’s Aaron Todd had 20 points to lead the winners, while Tyler Brooks of Presque Isle paced the East with 18.
In between the boys’ games, a dunk contest was held and Lewis was declared the champion.
In the girls’ A-B contest, the East scored a 119-67 triumph behind Jordan Knowlton of Camden Hills, who tallied 22 points, and Miss Basketball finalist Chandler Guerrette of Presque Isle, who had 20. Megan Ireland of Presque Isle was also in double figures with 12 points.
The C-D girls’ game saw the East come out on top, 74-70. Lacey McQuarrie of Hodgdon and Jillian Woodward of Orono each had 13 points for the East, with Richmond’s Jamie Plummer leading the West by netting 15.
Sarah Caron of Boothbay won the girls’ three-point shooting contest by hitting 14 long-range shots in 60 seconds.
State foul shooting champions were decided earlier in the day. Emily Keene of Spruce Mountain netted 49 of 50 for the girls’ title. Ireland, the Northern Region representative, was next with 45, with Woodward hitting 42 and Chloe Smedley of York making 39.
Bivighouse won the boys’ competitition by sinking 45 of 50 attempts. Beal and Dustin Cole of Bonny Eagle both had 44, while Derek LeBlanc of Madison made 43.
The Maine Association of Basketball Coaches (MABC) organized regional competitions earlier this year to determine the finalists who competed for the state championship.
