CARIBOU — The Caribou Parks and Recreation Department hosted its first high school indoor soccer tournament on Saturday, March 23.
The tournament was split up with a girls division in the morning and a boys division in the afternoon.
“For the first year of hosting the event, we felt that it was a success to have six girls’ teams and seven boys’ teams come out to compete,” said tourney director Matt Bouchard. “In the future, we hope to have even more teams join in the fun.”
Teams that competed in the girls’ division included Ashland, Fort Fairfield, Fort Kent and Houlton and two from Caribou.
In the preliminary stages, the tournament was set up as a round-robin style format with Fort Fairfield dominating play and earning the first seed into the playoffs. Caribou II entered as a No. 2 seed, followed by Ashland, Fort Kent, Houlton and Caribou I.
During the single-elimination tournament play, Fort Kent and Ashland moved on to play in the semifinal games with Caribou II and Fort Fairfield. From there, Caribou II faced Fort Kent, who defeated the tough Fort Fairfield team in the semifinals.
The final couldn’t have been any closer as regulation ended in a tie forcing sudden victory, which also ended in a tie. It came down to two rounds of penalty kicks before Caribou defeated Fort Kent and was named the 2013 girls’ indoor soccer champs.
In the boys’ division, Houlton dominating by allowing only one goal the entire tourney.
Houlton entered the single-elimination tourney as the top seed, followed by Presque Isle in second, Fort Kent in third, Mars Hill in fourth, Caribou in fifth, Limestone in sixth and Fort Fairfield in seventh.
Houlton beat Presque Isle in the finals, 4-0.
