• John Roberts, who has been taking a census of Caribou’s school children who completed his work Saturday reports the number of scholars of this town to be 1,849.
• Henry Witham, who has been a valued employee in this office for some time, is clerking in Fair’s Cash Bazaar.
100 Years Ago-Apr. 24, 1913
• Of local interest — E. F. Shaw returned from Patten Saturday, where he had been to purchase another carload of horses. Mrs. L. J. Pendell of Caribou recently won third prize offered for the state of Maine by the Armour Company for recipes concocted from their products with her bean salad.
• Phone service doesn’t deliver — Night telephone service in Stockholm is far from what it ought to be. Now and again cases come to our attention when parties have to work the phone crank in the early morning unsuccessfully. One party went to several different phones on different lines trying to awake the New Sweden Central over Caribou, but without avail. The baby had to be born without the doctor’s attendance.
75 Years Ago-Apr. 28, 1938
• Four receive pilot’s licenses — Four more flying students received their solo licenses at the Caribou Airport last Friday. Those receiving licenses were: Judge Irvine Peterson, Caribou; Dr. Roy H. Skofield, Fort Fairfield; James Higgins and James J. Howlett, both of Caribou.
• Around town — Romeo Dumais has moved from his home on Washburn St. to his farm on the Van Buren Road. Romeo is one of the R. F. D. carriers. Miss Virginia Jacobs returned from Augusta last Friday where she was attending the state examination for nurses. Mr. Louis Sirois will hold classes in public speaking and elocution in a studio in the Aroostook Motors building for students ranging from eight to fifteen years of age.

• Safer biking for kids — Here’s an announcement of interest to the youth of Caribou. Boys and girls, bring your bike to the VFW parking lot Sunday, April 28 at 1 p.m. and fluorescent reflector tape will be put on your bike for free. This is a safety program sponsored by the Lister-Knowlton VFW Post.
• Babe Ruth tourney comes to Aroostook — The Maine State Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament will be held in Aroostook County this year it was announced by John Rowe, long a leader in the sport for teen boys. The Caribou man who will be director, said all games will be played in Fort Fairfield with players from various parts of the state quartered in the Armory there.

• Six win state arts awards — Six students of the Caribou School System were selected at the state level to compete in the national judging of the annual PTA Art Reflextions Program in May. State winners in this year’s competition were, Honorable Mention: Chris Davisdon and Andrea Sleeper, grades 7-9 photography; Angela Ostlund, grades 10-12 photography; Becky Pelletier, grades 10-12 visual arts; Heidi Lufkin, grades 10-12 music; Wayde Gendreau, grades 10-12 literature.
• Nordic Lakers elect officers — The Nordic Lakers Winter Sports Club held its annual meeting March 25 at the American Legion in Stockholm with the following officers elected: President, Dick Lagassee; Vice President, Bud Anderson; Secretary, Debbie Sund; Treasurer, Mike Hewitt; and Directors Joey Thibodeau and Leo Labbe.
