On May 10 the Riverside Cafe, formerly known as the Red Brick garage, opened its doors to the public at 7 a.m. and was a beehive of activity from then until about mid-afternoon when the chef and his helpers had a much-needed break. Many of the diners opted to eat their lunch at the tables that were on the balcony overlooking the Mattawamkeag River and that also has a handicap ramp leading to it.
The weather cooperated for eating outside and, though it was cloudy, it was warm. The dining area is spacious and there is a padded bench along the front window of the room in the event that a customer may have to wait to be served.
Bake Sale
On May 11, the Island Falls Historical Society held its annual spring food sale at Jerry’s Thriftway with Ava Joy and her daughter, Amy, doing a very brisk business. This was a bread and pie only sale and there was a great variety of different kinds of bread and many different pies, from custard to pumkin. All proceeds will be going to the onward restoration of the Tingley House.
Signs of spring
I still have birds coming to my feeders but I am not taking out so much seeds now. I have to keep my gold finch and red poles and wrens happy. Looked out the other day and there was a red-breasted grossbeak having a lunch — I hadn’t seen one all winter. I still have the pesky squirrels who, despite all my efforts, still manage to somehow, cling to the supposedly squirrel-free feeders and eat a lot of the sunflower seeds.
I am still swimming at Vacationland Estates and am joined now by quite a few more ladies from the surrounding towns. John White, my swimming friend from Smyrna, is the only male there and he is very faithful on arriving for his swim despite the bevy of women who now arrive. Once in awhile another man will appear with his wife as they are staying at the Estates and take advantage of the pool so John doesn’t feel quite so alone.
