Second-graders share what they’ve learned from the Sunshine Fund

    When officials with the Marissa Lloyd Sunshine Fund visited second-graders last week, bringing them lots of information about serious life issues like bullying and even coping with the death of a loved one. Here are just a few of the things students learned.

Jesse Taggett
Second-grader, Woodland
    Question: What does it mean to use your voice?
    Answer: “Speak up when people are bullying you.”
Candence St. Pierre
Sunshine Citizenship Award winner, Limestone
    Question: What are ways that you can spread sunshine every day?
    Answer: “Tell people to stop bullying.”
Nickie Deschaine
Sunshine Citizenship Award winner, Hilltop
    Question: What can you tell us about Marissa Lloyd?
    Answer: “She was very sweet, and she was seven. She teaches us that a voice is a voice, no matter how small.”
Nevaeh Trombley
Sunshine Citizenship Award winner, Woodland
    Question: What can you tell us about Marissa Lloyd?
    Answer: “She was in second grade when she died in a car crash, and she was nice. Through the Sunshine Fund, I learned to always be a nice kid.”

    Question: What was the book you received, and what did you learn from it?
    Answer: “‘Chester the Raccoon and the Big Bad Bully’ — you learn to be nice and to not be a bully.”

    Question: What does it mean to be a good citizen?
    Answer: “It means to be good to other people and help each other out.”

    Question: What was the book you received, and what did you learn from it?
    Answer: “My book was ‘Chester the Raccoon and the Acorn Full of Memories,’ and the book talked about making memories of people who died — like how they put up Marissa’s basketball jersey and picture at the school. It was a good book. I read it with my mom, and again just by myself.”

    Question: What are ways that you can spread sunshine every day?
    Answer: “You can do it by being kind, and being a good citizen to other people — like you do something nice for them, and maybe they’ll do it to someone else. Like you could help them pick up their stuff if they spill something.”

    Answer: “Be nice, and be helpful — like if someone’s hurt, you can help them.”

    Answer: “When someone is bullying you, it means you say ‘I don’t like that, please don’t do that again.’”
