The Island Falls VFW Post 7529 held its annual Fourth of July breakfast at the post home on Route 2, from 7-11 a.m. Chef Gray Hawk and his two helpers and Patti Hartin were there to help serve the many who came and enjoyed the eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, baked beans and hot biscuits.
Many of the summer people are here now and enjoyed eating out on a hot day. Donn and Marion Burton arrived about 10 days ago from their home in Rancho Cordova, Calif. and are at their cottage on upper Mattawamkeag Lake. While here they plan to visit friends and family in the area as they are former residents of the county and are very happy to be here for a few months.
The Island Falls Historical Society recently had a yard sale held by the Emerson house, and though I did not attend, I hope it was a successful sale. I am still enjoying watching the fat little groundhog who is living under my front steps this summer. I throw out scraps for him and sometimes pieces of old bread so I guess he isn’t starving to death as he sure waddles when he walks.
I am also swimming several times a week at Vacationland Estates as are many others from the area. We have ladies coming from both Sherman and Patten and we all have a good time enjoying the fellowship, plus the pool, too.
I have a lot of gold finch still, and redpolls but am not putting out as much bird seed now. Figure they wont need it until the fall and cold winter sets in. The new soft-service is open and doing a booming business now that the weather has gotten warmer. It is located at one end of the red brick garage and has tables where you can sit and watch all the traffic now coming thru the town while eating your soft serve. There is also a bicycle clinic held every week near the soft-serve and if your bike need help that is the place to go.
