Garelick Farms has selected Amanda Winslow of Mapleton and Joy Wang of Presque Isle as the Aroostook County winners of the “Pure Happiness” design contest. Winslow and Wang each received a $500 savings bond and $500 for the art department at their schools to use for supplies or any other education-related expenses.
Earlier this spring — when Winslow was a fourth-grader at Mapleton Elementary School and Wang was a fifth-grader at Zippel Elementary School — Garelick Farms invited Maine students in grades K-6 to submit an illustration depicting what pure happiness means to them for the “Pure Happiness” design contest. Sixteen winners were selected from a pool of over 500 entries.
Winslow described her submission as, “Pure happiness to me is a cool glass of milk on a hot summers day,” showing a glass of milk in a beautiful, outside scenery of rolling hills and sunflowers.
“I really like nature and I think milk is really important, so I made the glass of milk bigger than the sunflowers,” said Winslow, 10. “It took a little while to come up with the idea, but I went with that one because the theme was ‘Pure Happiness’ and nature is pure.
“My entry was done with both water colors and colored pencils,” she said. “I spent six or seven hours on it over several different days. I’m really glad I entered the contest, and I’m happy that I won.”
Winslow is the daughter of Nancy and Willie Winslow.
Through Wang’s submission she explained, “Toasting marshmallows around a campfire is pure happiness to me. Marshmallows are delicious and having a campfire is fun,” showing a campfire with two people roasting their marshmallows and a dog in the background.
“I like marshmallows, and whenever we toast them we do it as a family, and that makes me happy,” said Wang, 11. “I was in the Gifted and Talented art program at my school and we all entered the contest. My picture was done with colored pencils and I spent probably three or four days of class time working on it. I’m happy with how it turned out.
“My artwork has never won anything before, so I’m pretty happy,” she said, noting that she will likely use the $500 for college. “I’ll probably enter other art contests in the future because it’s fun, plus you never now when you might win.”
Wang is the daughter of Chunzeng Wang and Lihua Zhao.
Officials at Garelick Farms, headquartered in Franklin, Mass., were pleased with this year’s contest.
“At Garelick Farms, we are passionate about encouraging happy, healthy lifestyles,” said Amy Godin, marketing director. “We received so many wonderful pieces of art and were incredibly impressed by all the talent and creativity we saw from these young students. We are thrilled that we could provide this opportunity for them to exercise their imaginations.”
