Basketball clinic offered at Caribou HS

    Caribou High School’s summer basketball clinic for youth in grades 3-8 will be offered Aug. 19-23.
    The camp is for both girls and boys and the fee is $30. Grades 3-5 will meet each day from 4:30-6 p.m. and grades 6-8 from 6-7:30 p.m.

 

Caribou girls capture preseason tournament

    The Caribou Vikings defeated Presque Isle on a penalty kicks to win the championship at the 21st annual PIHS Invitational Soccer Tournament held Friday at the Johnson Athletic Complex.
    After playing to a scoreless tie in regulation, Madison Doody, Delaney Williams, Sara  Boyer and Eileen Patton converted PKs for coach Todd Albert’s team. Hannah Graham and Taylor Williams made the PKs for Presque Isle.
    Caribou ended up with a 3-1-2 record during the round-robin portion of the tourney to advance to the title game against the Wildcats.
    Presque Isle beat Madawaska in the boys’ final in another match decided on penalty kicks.
    Other teams participating in the event were Ashland, Van Buren, Fort Kent and Fort Fairfield.

Any-deer permit application deadline

    The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is now accepting applications for the 2013 any-deer (antlerless) permit lottery.
    Online applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 15 and can be found by visiting www.mefishwildlife.com.
    It is free to apply for the any-deer permit lottery. The lottery drawing will be held on Sept. 9 and results will be posted on the department’s website after 2 p.m.
    A total of 46,710 any-deer permits will be issued in these 16 wildlife management districts: 3, 6, 7, 12, 13, 15-17, 20-26 and 29. It is bucks-only in all other wildlife management districts.
    Deer hunting season (firearms) begins with youth deer hunting day on Oct. 26. Youth hunters may take a buck statewide or an antlerless deer only in the wildlife management districts where any-deer permits will be issued this fall. Maine resident-only day will be held on Nov. 2. Deer hunting season (firearms) runs from Nov. 4 to Nov. 30.

Softball batting practice offered in New Sweden

    A slow pitch softball batting practice, for any interested senior 55 years of age and older, is being offered Saturdays at the baseball field behind Northstar Variety in New Sweden beginning at 9 a.m.

KeyBank charity golf tourney set Saturday

    The seventh annual KeyBank Charity Golf Event is set for Saturday, Aug. 17 at Presque Isle Country Club.
    Proceeds will benefit several area charitable organizations and projects, including animal shelters, school projects, Project Graduation, Presque Isle Youth Hockey, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Aroostook House of Comfort, Junior Achievement, the United Way of Aroostook and Women, Work and Community.
    New organizations receiving funding this year are the Aroostook Aspirations Initiative and the Special Olympics Snowdogs basketball program.
    Prizes include cash for the winning teams in both the men’s and women’s divisions for both gross and net scores. Prizes will also be offered for closest to the pin, longest drive and a putting contest. A new car will be a hole-in-one prize.
    A barbecue lunch for all participants is being provided.
    The shotgun start is at 9 a.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m. There is no minimum handicap for the three-person teams. The registration fee is $120 per team.
