Lucia Bragg, at right, poses with a gateman at one of the many castles she visited while on her student ambassador trip to Europe.
She traveled to four countries and numerous cities with 36 other students from Maine and New York. They had the opportunity to be briefed for a British Parliament meeting and had the opportunity to not only see how other cultures live but also had the chance to work and complete 10 hours of community service work. They attended the schools in those countries and lived with host families.
They stayed in Belfast, Ireland and learned much about the troubles and accomplishments of this area, since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement. The night before they left Ireland, bombings and shooting could be heard about two miles away. Of course, they also enjoyed many mystic and famous sites.
At the end, the students earned a college credit from the Washington School of World Studies. Lucia Bragg is now officially a Student Ambassador.
Of all the destinations they visited Lucia said her favorite was the Gap of Dunloe, in Kerry — which they toured by horse-drawn carts and a lot of walking. They also traveled one of the rivers, in the Gap, by boat and made a wish at the famous Wishing Bridge. This area was so beautiful and a site Lucia wished would never end.
In Scotland and Ireland, they had the opportunity to work and live beside the locals. They all had a chance to shear sheep, see them gathered by trained dogs and learn how the teens completed daily chores for the elderly. They did everything from weeding gardens, cutting peat for the winter’s fuel, to just visiting with the elderly and learning from their stories.
Lucia would like to thank the many people for helping make this amazing trip possible, including family, friends, local businesses and charters, and the many people in town who were willing to donate money or bottles.
