Washburn Scouts retire flags

    On Aug. 20, members of Washburn Boy Scout Troop 177, Oscar Dow American Legion Post 48 and the Washburn Rotary Club conducted the seventh annual flag retirement ceremony at Story Park in Washburn. The evening began with a hotdog roast provided by the Washburn Rotary Club, followed by the patriotic flag retirement ceremony conducted by Boy Scout troop 177 and Oscar Dow Post 48. 

    A pledge of allegiance was led by Senior Patrol Leader Bryce Roix and members of Troop 177, with a prayer by Pastor Sue Brown and “Taps” played by Keith Brown. The special patriotic ceremony was led by Post 48 members and flags were inspected and brought to the retirement container by members of Troop 177. Several Washburn citizens were on hand to view this very important flag retirement ceremony. In all, over 275 flags of all sizes were retired after being inspected to insure they were no longer worthy of service. 
    Among those participating were Boy Scouts: Larry Harrison, Stacy Skinner, Caleb Thompson, Tyler Farley, Beckam (unknown full name), Aaron Skinner, Ryan Cole, Carvor Pendexter, Taylor Skinner, Bryce Roix, Tim Roix, Donald Wilcox. American Legion members taking part included: Willie Drost, Jasper Umphrey, Miss Teen Washburn Elizabeth White, Charlie Durost, Bill Flewelling, Kermit Fuller and Robert Brown. Washburn Rotary members on hand included: Dana Woodman, Charlotte Griffin, Mike Umphrey, Larry Bull, Andy White, Keith Brown and Cindy Richendollar.

2013 pageant held

    The Miss Washburn Pageants were held Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Washburn District High School. The theme for this year’s pageants was “Pageants for Paws” and the contestants were able to raise and donate over $500 and some other “goodies” to the Central Aroostook Humane Society.
    Kely Hemphill was the pageant director, with co-directors Jeannie Gilson and Bonnie Nelson. The sponsors for the Little/Pre-Teen Pageant were: Washburn Rotary Club, Oasis Salon, Diamond Real Estate Investment Group, All County Construction Services, White Farms, M & B Farm, Bella Salon, JP Cash Market, Country Farms Market, Spring’s Daycare, MJ’s Pitlane, Little Bears Daycare. The sponsors for the Jr/Teen/Miss Pageant were: Washburn Rotary Club, Oasis Salon, White’s Service, Scott Appraisal, Natural Living Center, Aroostook Watchmen Radio, BRSA, Irving Farms, Washburn Trailrunners, Hester Financial, Big Bear Realty—Ricky Castonguay, McManus Construction, Larry Bragg Painting, MJ’s Pitlane, Studio Looks and Winston Bragg Painting.
    The girls competing in the Little Miss Wasburn Pageant were: Kassidy Blackstone, daughter of Robbie and Spring Blackstone, dancing to “Gold”; Laurel Brown, daughter of Travis and Beth Brown, performing a dance to “Wake Me Up Before You Go”; Madelyn Johnston, daughter of Joshua and Amanda Johnston, performing a dance to “ABC”; Meygan Marie May, daughter of Malissa Gordon and Todd Smith, dancing to the instrumental “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”; and Alyssa Shackett, daughter of Wayne and Laurie Shackett, performing a dance to “Daydream”.
    Competing in the Pre-Teen Miss Washburn Pageant were: Emma Johnston, daughter of Joshua and Amanda Johnston, dancing to “Get Your Head in the Game”; Caroline Brown, daughter of Travis and Beth Brown, performing a dance to “Under the Sea”; Hannah White, daughter of Matthew and Amy White, dancing to “You Should be Dancing”; Abbie Easler, daughter of David and Tammi Easler, performing a gymnastics routine to “Shake it Up”; Tru Drost, daughter of John and Kristie Drost, doing a gymnastics routine to “You’ll Be in my Heart”; and Raegyn Chavez, daughter of Shelley and Rodney Chavez Jr., performing a clog routine to “Levels”.
    Competing in the Junior Miss Washburn Pageant were: Danielle Thompson, daughter of Terry and Angela Thompson, performing a lyrical dance to “You Raise Me Up”; Katie Easler, daughter of David and Tammi Easler, singing the song “Potential Breakup Song”; Kristen Dube, daughter of Shawn and Lynn Dube, performing a dance to “Footloose”; and Sydney Chavez, daughter of Shelley and Rodney Chavez Jr., performing a clog routine to “Long Way to the Top”.
    Competing in the Miss Teen Washburn Pageant were: Makenzie Vaughn, daughter of Erik and Erika Vaughn, performing a ballet en point dance to “Sad”; and Elizabeth White, daughter of Andrew and Kelly White, singing “When the Children Cry”.
    Competing in the Miss Washburn Pageant were: Courtney Cannon, daughter of Rick and Mistie Cannon, who sang “Don’t Rain on my Parade”; and Jacqueline McCarthy, daughter of Jack and Cindi McCarthy, singing the song “Castle On a Cloud”.
    Amanda White, 2012 Little Miss Washburn, passed her crown on to the new 2013 Little Miss Washburn, Kassidy Blackstone. Alyssa Shackett was the first runner-up for Little Miss Washburn, and Laurel Brown was second runner-up.
    Reagan Whipkey, 2012 Pre-Teen Miss Washburn, passed her crown on to Tru Drost, 2013 Pre-Teen Miss Washburn. Emma Johnston was the first runner-up for Pre-Teen Miss Washburn, and Caroline Brown was second runner-up.
    Anecia Fuller, 2012 Junior Miss Washburn, passed her crown to Sydney Chavez, 2013 Junior Miss Washburn. Carly Bragg was the first runner-up in the Junior Miss Washburn Pageant, and Samantha White was second runner-up.
    Kaylee Doody, 2012 Teen Miss Washburn, passed her crown on to Elizabeth White, 2013 Teen Miss Washburn. Mackenzie Vaughn was the first runner-up for Teen Miss Washburn.
    Caitlyn Roix, 2012 Miss Washburn, passed her crown on to Jacqueline McCarthy, 2013 Miss Washburn. Courtney Cannon was first-runner up for Miss Washburn.
