Pierson, Henrietta I., 96, July 21, 2013. A celebration of her life will be held at First Congregational Church in Rutland, MA, on Saturday, September 14 at 11 a.m.
CASCO, ME and RUTLAND, MA – Henrietta I. Pierson, 96, returned home to God on July 21, 2013, at Casco Inn Residential, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 26, 1917, in Fort Kent to Cassius and Roberta Austin. She was a graduate of Fort Kent High School and Fort Kent Normal School where she earned her teaching degree. She taught in Wintervale and Millinocket before getting married.
In 1940, she married the love of her life, Stanley U. Pierson of New Sweden. After WWII, they moved to Worcester, MA and started a family.
In the 1950s, she became involved with The Worcester Association for Retarded Children, becoming chairwomen of the state convention in 1960. She was also involved in starting Camp Joy, a day camp for children with mental retardation in Paxton, MA in 1957.
In 1965, her family settled in Rutland, MA where she lived until 2010.
Henrietta was an adventurous soul. When she was a young woman, she became a Maine Guide. She loved being outdoors, traveled all over the US, Europe and parts of Asia. As a talented seamstress, she made many of her own clothes. She was known for her fashion sense and her high heels.
After her daughter-in-law, Randy Pierson, died in 1981, she selflessly help her son, Austin, raise his three children.
In 2010, Henrietta moved to Maine to be closer to family.
Henrietta was predeceased by her husband, Stanley U. Pierson, her son, Myles Pierson, and her brother, Forrest Austin.
She is survived by her sons, Austin Pierson of Greenville, ME and Mark Pierson of Marblehead, MA; grandchildren, Rebecca Lee and husband, Rex Lee, of Greenville, ME, Jessica Pierson Biron and husband, Timothy Biron, of Gray, ME and Kendall Pierson of Boston, MA. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Spencer and Mason Lee and Hannah and Ella Biron, who miss her greatly.
The family would like to extend many thanks to the staff of Casco Inn Residential and Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for the outstanding care of Henrietta.
