Don and Marion Burton, former residents of the area, have returned to their home in Rancho Cordova, Calif. after spending several weeks at their cottage on upper Mattawamkeag Lake. The summer weather wasn’t too nice, but they enjoyed visiting with friends and relatives, and all the Summerfest activities, nevertheless, and are looking forward to returning next year.
Dean and Jane Fitzgerald, who have spent the summer at their cottage on Pleasant Pond, have returned to their home in Millinocket for the winter and I am sure Jane will miss joining all her friends at the pool for swimming every morning, as they will miss her.
I have had a coon in my birdfeeders lately and this a.m. found one of the feeders on the ground as the coon had knocked if from the tree limb and had eaten every last sunflower seed in it. Plus, he’s emptying all the other feeders. My next door neighbor had a problem with them too so he plans to trap them and then take them some place far away and leave them. I wonder how long it will be before they find their way back here? Still have lots of chickadees and the other day several wrens appeared and an occasional blue jay.
The doe and her twins are still appearing in the evening just about dusk and one night it was fun watching the two young ones having a ball chasing one another all over the back lawn while the doe calmly kept on grazing and paying no attention to them. I also saw the big buck recently, also at dusk, and he stayed quite awhile before going back into the nearby woods. I still have the fat woodchuck living under my front steps and throw out some pieces of bread for him once in awhile.
