Panther squads split games vs. Southern Aroostook

    The Presque Isle Wildcats needed some late heroics to run their winning streak to seven.

    Senior Aaron Kofstad connected on a long shot from outside the 18-yard box with just 2:39 left on the clock to power PI to a 2-1 home victory over Hermon Saturday.
    Hermon jumped out to the lead as Brevon Haskell connected on a Matt Leach feed midway through the first half, but the Wildcats answered before intermission when Devin Schinhofen drilled a penalty kick after teammate Ben Nickerson was taken down in the area.
    PI held a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal, with Cody Lyford saving five for the Wildcats and Hermon’s Hunter Clukey turning away seven.
    Last Wednesday, PI blanked Mount Desert Island in Bar Harbor, 2-0.
    The Wildcats have not lost since being bested by No. 1 Ellsworth at home Sept. 7, 2-1. The ’Cats, ranked second only behind Ellsworth in the Eastern Maine Class B standings, are at home again Saturday for a 3 p.m. match against Old Town. PI won the first meeting between the two teams on Sept. 21 in Old Town, 4-1.
    The Presque Isle girls held the powerful Hermon Hawks off the scoreboard for almost 60 minutes before the visitors broke the scoreless tie on a goal by freshman Brianna Saulter. The goal held up as Hermon won, 1-0, for its 10th victory without a loss.
    Hermon held a 24-5 shot advantage, with PI goalkeeper Jillian Flynn making 15 saves to help keep her team close.
    The Wildcats were also shut out by MDI last Tuesday, 2-0. PI is now 3-5-2 on the season and in 11th place in the Heal Point rankings. and will try to avenge a 1-0 loss to Old Town on Sept. 21 when it hosts the Coyotes at 1 p.m. Saturday.
    The Ashland girls picked up their ninth victory of the campaign Thursday, logging a season high in goals with the 10-3 home victory over Katahdin.
    Leann McNally had four goals, with Marissa Chasse notching a pair for the Hornets. Caitlin Paradis scored a goal and also had three assists. Ally Beaulier, Cassidy Pelletier and Rachel Gillis were the other goal scorers for Ashland, which improved to 9-1 on the season.
    The Hornet boys also garnered a win, shutting out Katahdin, 4-0. Cody Blair continues to lead the offense as he had two of the goals. Jarrett Beaulier and Tyler Chasse netted a goal apiece, with Tim Tarr earning the shutout with four saves.
    Ashland is now 5-1-1 over its last seven matches and 5-3-2 overall heading into Thursday’s key matchup against Wisdom in St. Agatha.
    The Central Aroostook girls kept Southern Aroostook off the scoreboard Thursday en route to a 3-0 home triumph. Karli Levesque scored a goal in each half and Molly Anthony added a late tally to key the offense. April Santiago registered the shutout in goal. After an 0-3 start, the Panthers had won five of seven entering Tuesday night’s match at Fort Fairfield.
    The CA boys lost to the Warriors Thursday, 2-0. Jackson Mathers and Cody Lassonde had first-half goals for SA. The Panthers were 3-5-2 overall heading into Tuesday’s matchup at Fort Fairfield.
    In the latest Class D standings, for girls, Washburn is in first place, followed by Ashland in second. Fort Fairfield is currently fourth and Central Aroostook is fifth. Easton holds the No. 9 position. For boys, Easton is ranked first and Ashland third, with Washburn holding on to seventh place. Central Aroostook is ninth and Fort Fairfield 16th.
    The top 13 girls’ teams and the top 15 boys’ teams will advance into the post-season, which gets under way Oct. 25.
