UMPI fall sports action continues

Men’s cross country
At Waterville Saturday, the University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s cross country team placed fourth in the Colby College Invitational.

Philip Boody was first for the Owls and 19th overall on the eight-kilometer course in 30:58, followed by Jesse Sandstrom in 21st (31:03), Corey Hebert in 25th (31:40), Brandon Wade in 49th (35:12), David Huntley in 66th (41:26), and Richard Landry 68th (43:01).
The Owls’ score of  110 was good enough to best Husson University by two points.
The Maine Championships are up next on Saturday, Oct. 19, again to be held at Colby College.
Women’s cross country
The Lady Owl harriers also competed in Saturday’s Colby College Invitational, with senior standout Kayla Legassie clocking the 5K terrain in 20:41.
Destinee Neureuther set a solid pace over this first mile before settling in for the more hilly and difficult second mile and placed in 29th out of 52 runners at 25:16. Breanna Kafka and Shawna McDonough ran 27:12 (37th overall) and 32:16 (50th), respectively.
The Lady Owls now move into a planned weekend off from competition before returning to this same course Oct. 19 looking to improve on performances.
Golf
UMPI’s Reynold Brown shot an eight-over par 78 at the Maine Maritime Academy Mariner Invitational Friday. The Blue and Gold had an unusually difficult day on the course at the Augusta Country Club, finishing in a tie for fifth place with the University of New England.
Brown finished among a group of seven golfers who tied for ninth place individually. Junior DJ Conley shot an 82 and Jordan Beaulier ranked third for the Owl contingent on the day with an 84. Senior Mike Balmer registered an 89 and Hazen Dauphine finished two shots behind with a 91.
The squad also participated in the Colby College Invitational Sunday. UMPI compiled 216 strokes and placed fourth out of six teams, with Bowdoin placing in first with 206.
Brown and Balmer both shot 71s, while Conley, Beaulier, Dauphine and Depner coming in with 72s.
Women’s soccer
Sophomore Nicole Cyr made her return to the Owl lineup memorable, snapping home the game-winning goal less than three minutes into her first appearance back from an injury.
While the youthful squad of Owl booters outshot the visiting crew from SMCC 17-9 in the first period, the match was a back-and-forth half of solid soccer.
Cyr sat out the first half, but was inserted into the lineup to begin the second half of play and immediately added the offensive punch the Owls needed to score the game’s only goal just 2:50 into the second stanza.
On Sunday, the Owls were blitzed by UM-Machias at Park Family Field in Presque Isle, 7-1. The Owls’ lone goal was provided by Mikaelah Tracy off a Cyr assist in the match’s 55th minute.
    UMPI’s record is now 4-7-1.
Men’s soccer
The men’s soccer team suffered a 3-1 home loss to UM-Machias Sunday afternoon.
Ryan Van Buskirk of the Owls knotted the score at 1-1 24:28 into the first half off a Derek Healy assist and the two teams went into intermission tied. However, UMM took control with goals 17 minutes apart.
Caleb Bragg-Grady handled the goalkeeping chores for coach Alan Gordon’s Owls, now 4-7 on the season.
