On Oct. 11, Eddie Webb, nephew of Clayton and Charlene Webb, arrived in Island Falls, bringing with him a great large cut of moose meat. The three of them set about grinding this meat, along with all the other ingredients that go into moose meat for pies.
When they finally finished this task they had about 16 quarts, which I am sure will show up sometime soon on their Thanksgiving dinner tables.
My niece, Maurine Hannaford, daughter of the late Shirley and Mike Harrison, has been my guest for a few days. While here, she enjoyed touring the area, visiting the Amish store in Smyrn and enjoyed the cuisine at Brookside and the new restaurant here in Island Falls. She has since returned home to Standish, but is planning to return, if possible, sometime during the winter months.
I have been keeping my bird feeders full of sunflower seeds and I think the blue jays and chickadees have eaten most of them. My next-door neighbor informed me that he had trapped the big coon and taken him miles away, in the hope that he will never find his way back here. I still have not seen any gray squirrels, or red ones, either, and I sure hope they take their time in returning.
The zinnias in my flower garden are beginning to lose their brightness since the weather has cooled, but they are still pretty and have not been frost bitten yet. There are still a few apples on the tree near my driveway so the deer keep coming and eating the ones that have dropped. I haven’t seen the deer lately so I guess they arrive after dark. Hope to see them more often in my back yard soon.
