UMPI hoop teams to host Star City Classic

    PRESQUE ISLE — The University of Maine at Presque Isle will open its basketball season this weekend by hosting the Star City Classic at Wieden Gymnasium.

    The Owl men are coached by Jim Casciano, who is beginning his third season at Presque Isle. The team had an 11-14 record during the 2012-13 campaign.
    Doug Carter takes over for Marc Heidorn as the UMPI women’s coach. Under Heidorn, the Lady Owls recorded an 8-17 mark a season ago.
    The men’s tournament has just three teams playing round-robin style. The host Owls play UM-Machias Friday at 6 p.m. The Clippers will take on UM-Fort Kent Saturday at 4 p.m. and UMPI and UMFK square off Sunday at 4 p.m.
    Four teams are competing in the women’s tourney. On Saturday at 6 p.m,, UM-Fort Kent and Thomas College take to the court, followed at 8 p.m. by the Owls against Newbury College of Brookline, Mass.
    In Sunday’s matchups, Newbury and UMFK tip off at noon, with UMPI and Thomas playing at 2 p.m.
