PI woman named Mrs. Aroostook

Local television journalist and personality, Shawn Cunningham, has been named Mrs. Aroostook County 2014 for the Maine Academic Scholarship Pageant.

An award-winning reporter/fill-in anchor at WAGM-TV in Presque Isle for 12 years, Cunningham is a well-known television personality throughout the community.  PI-Cunningham-dcx-sh-47 She is active in a number of community service groups including the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club and the Caribou Business and Professional Women’s Club. She has helped coordinate Team WAGM to participate and fundraise for charities including the Aroostook leg of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and C.A.N.C.E.R. Cunningham is also a spokesperson for “Live Well Aroostook” and “In The Pink” — two County-based health and wellness campaigns.
She is a past president of the Maine Federation of Business and Professional Women and was named by the organization as Maine Young Career Woman of the Year.         Although Cunningham’s livelihood is reporting local stories, she has a passion for service and helping to make a difference in the community she lives, works and serves. But by far, the best title she now has is the role of mother to her newborn son.
As if her workload, service participation and family life isn’t keeping her busy enough, Cunningham will proudly take on the role of Mrs. Aroostook County. In that role countywide, she will help promote the Maine Academic Scholarship Pageant’s platform of anti-bullying throughout Maine schools and communities. The platform is called “The Crown Cares” and it helps to foster a respectful environment in schools. It is an initiative coordinated by the Unite Against Bullying ME.
Cunningham will also move on to compete for the state title next summer.  This year, the Maine Academic Scholarship Pageant expanded to include a Ms/Mrs. division to mentor, empower and unite Maine women in this issue that affects all youth.
