Keeping Kids Warm — Members of the Ashland Tillikum Chapter 99 Order of the Eastern Star held a fundraiser during their annual Christmas party to raise funds to purchase hats, mittens and warm socks for elementary school children at the Ashland District School. Here members of the club present the warm items to the Ashland District School social worker. “We can always use them,” said Lori Demerchant, the ADS school social worker. “Children lose or forget their mittens from time to time or get their socks wet, so we like to be able to make sure we have extras; but some kids don’t have any,” she added.
Dozens of good-quality hats and mittens were purchased. Some were also donated along with some hand-made items from local craftswomen.
“One of the main objectives of the Order of the Eastern Star is our charitable efforts. We are always thinking ahead about where the next need may be and we like to keep the money local. Even small donations make a big impact,” said Andrea White, the Worthy Matron of Tillikium Chapter 99.
