In recent grades 3-4 co-ed basketball league action through the Presque Isle Recreation Department, Oregon matched up with Indiana in a pre-holiday showdown.
Oregon’s Faith Sjoberg came out strong in the first quarter by scoring nine of her game-high 17 points with some razzle-dazzle and sharp shooting as her team bested the Hoosiers, 20-17. Teammate Landon McDougal sunk three foul shots to round out the scoring. Indiana showcased a balanced attack with David Rayner and Cavin Cleaves scoring six points each and Devin Osse chipping in with five.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Florida bested Michigan, 29-15. Florida’s Josh Nadeau led the way with 19, followed by Logan Akeley and Jacob Watt both with four points. Matt Butler added a lay-up. Michigan tried to hang tough but nearly all the team’s points were scored in the fourth quarter with little time on the clock. Michigan scored just five points over the first three periods, while Asher Tuttle tallied nine of his 11 in the fourth. Dawson Beaulieu added a long jumper and Caleb Nash also scored from the perimeter in the loss.
The last couple games before the holiday break featured Georgetown and North Carolina squaring off in game one of another doubleheader. Georgetown’s Cummings led the way in the 19-4 victory with 12 points, followed by Yarema with three and Ben Beaulieu and Jeffrey York both with buckets. For North Carolina, Chase Cloukey and Kaden Tardif both made baskets.
The final game before the break showcased the two unbeaten teams — No. 1 Oregon and No. 2 Duke. Sjoberg scored 14 of her 18 points in the first half with Garrett Fullen adding two baskets, Cade Ennis a layup and Corey White a free throw in the Ducks’ 25-14 victory. Duke was led by Xavier McAtee’s team-high 12 points, while Jordan Higgins hit a foul line jumper for the other two.
