The Caribou Vikings’ boys basketball team is now the only undefeated team in Class B after an impressive sweep of their weekend doubleheader. The team bested Mount Desert Island in Bar Harbor Friday before winning at Ellsworth the following afternoon.
Caribou needed two overtimes to down the EM runners-up Trojans Friday, 58-51. Dayne Savage scored 24 points and Cody Herbert added 17 for the winners. Derek Richardson pitched in with eight more.
Jon Phelps had 14 and Abe Philbrook 13 for MDI.
On Saturday, the Vikes had an easier time of it against the Eagles as they prevailed, 64-52. Savage (20), Herbert (17) and Richardson (10) again led the way offensively. Donovan Savage netted nine off the bench.
Steven Mahon had 14 points and Bruce St. Peter 12 for Ellsworth.
As of presstime Monday, Caribou was in fourth place in the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point standings with its 5-0 record, behind only Oceanside, Medomak Valley and Camden Hills, who each have one loss.
Caribou has a rugged week ahead. The team hosted Old Town in a make-up game Tuesday, entertain undefeated Class C Houlton Thursday and then make a road trip Saturday to play at Old Town.
The Limestone-MSSM girls are also unbeaten at 6-0 following easy wins last week over Hodgdon and Wisdom.
The Eagles trounced the Hawks Dec. 23, 68-18, with Chelsey Pelkey scoring 18 points in the road victory. Jackie Peers and Jordyn Hopkins chipped in with nine points each.
Summer Stoddard had 11 points for Hodgdon.
On Friday at home, Limestone-MSSM raced past Wisdom, 67-20, with Melissa Cantafio the high scorer in this one with 14 points. Alexis Bell (11), Mariah Williams (10) and Hopkins (10) were also in double figures for the Eagles. A 25-7 second-quarter run blew the game open.
Limestone-MSSM hosted East Grand Monday and have road games later this week against Madawaska and East Grand before taking on GHCA in another road contest Monday at UM-Presque Isle, their opponent’s home floor.
The Caribou girls fell to 2-3 with losses at MDI Friday (78-45) and Ellsworth Saturday (58-42).
Against MDI, Caribou trailed 28-5 after one quarter and was never in contention. Bria Judd led the Vikings with 12 points and Malari Page and Delaney Williams chipped in with seven each.
In the loss to the Eagles, Caribou trailed by only five points at intermission before being outscored 23-7 in the pivotal third quarter. Williams had 11 points and Maddie Doucette nine for the Vikes, who were back at home Tuesday to host Old Town. They switch venues against the Coyotes for Saturday’s game and then have a tough road contest Tuesday at unbeaten Presque Isle.
The Limestone-MSSM boys are still winless after falling at Hodgdon Dec. 23, 69-26, and at home to Wisdom Friday, 59-46.
Tristan Kirk poured in 22 points in the loss to the Pioneers, while Chris Bernier added 13. Freshman Victor Negron added 10. In the loss to Hodgdon, Kirk led the way with 11 and Bernier netted eight.
The Eagles have the same schedule as the girls — a home contest against East Grand Monday before going on the road against Madawaska, East Grand and GHCA.
