OAKFIELD, Maine — A routine traffic stop for speeding turned into much more serious charges for Derrick Gravely, 43, of Presque Isle early Saturday morning.

Gravely was driving north on Interstate 95 at 12:45 a.m. when Maine State Police Trooper Nick Casavant pulled him over for speeding near Oakfield. During the ensuing stop, Casavant learned that Gravely was operating with a suspended license.
Further investigation revealed the presence of about two pounds of processed marijuana and approximately 4.5 grams of crack cocaine in the vehicle.
Gravely was arrested for operating after revocation and transported to the Aroostook County Jail. Also arrested was a passenger in the vehicle, Robert Van Houten, 32, of Presque Isle. Van Houten was charged with trafficking in marijuana and possession of cocaine. He too was transported to the Aroostook County Jail.
The incident remains under investigation. Casavant was assisted by troopers Carman Lilley and Jill Monohan, as well as Presque Isle Police Department K-9 Dozer with his handler officer Kevin Reed.
