Worcester returns for Washburn girls

Junior guard Mackenzie Worcester, in her first game this season after suffering a hand injury in the preseason, had 16 points and four steals to help Washburn to its fifth win of the season at home Saturday.
Worcester, who scored 1,000 points during her first two seasons, was hurt in late-November. The team went 4-1 in her absence.
The Beavers will now be at full strength when they take on Van Buren at home in an effort to avenge their onl y loss.
Also on the injury front, Chandler Brewer of the Central Aroostook boys missed his second game of the season Saturday, but the Panthers survived Wisdom, 54-46.
Brewer had surgery in the off-season to remove his tailbone following an injury suffered last winter and is still feeling the effects.
His status for last night’s home game against Easton and for future games was unclear at presstime.
On the court, the PI girls won their ninth and 10th games of the season to run their winning streak to 54 heading into last night’s game against Caribou. The Wildcats are currently in first place in the Eastern Maine Class B standings.
Also at No. 1 are the Easton boys in EM Class D, who were at 8-0 entering last night’s game in Mars Hill following a comeback victory over Fort Fairfield Saturday.
Summaries of contests involving local teams played from Dec. 30-Jan. 4 are as follows:
Washburn girls 90, Ashland 31
At Washburn Saturday, Joan Overman led the way with 21 points as four players scored in double figures to propel the Beavers past Ashland.
Carmen Bragg contributed 18 points along with six assists. Nicole Olson added 15 points.
For the Hornets, Cassidy Pelletier scored nine points.
Easton boys 50, Fort Fairfield 45
At Fort Fairfield Saturday, Hunter Turner led all scorers with 27 points as the Bears defeated the hometown Tigers, who led after three quarters of play but were unable to hold on.
Logan Halvorson added eight points for Easton.
Robbie Watson led Fort Fairfield with 14 points while Johnny Theriault and Logan Craig each added 10.
Easton girls 68, Central Aroostook 18
At Easton Monday, the Bears placed four players in double figures in the win over the Central Aroostook Panthers of Mars Hill.
Kalie Ward had 14 points and 11 rebounds while Cassie Buck also tossed in 14 for Easton.
Karli Levesque paced the Panthers with 11 points.
Presque Isle girls 61, Hermon 47
The Wildcat girls ran out to a 41-9 halftime lead Saturday and upped their record to 10-0 in beating Hermon at home.
Hannah Graham paced the Wildcats with 23 points and Krystal Kingsbury had 13.
Hermon boys 44, Presque Isle 37
Later that afternoon at PIHS, Tyler Thayer scored 14 points to propel the Hawks by the Wildcats.
Drew Bates led Presque Isle with 10 points and Karson Eaton and Michael Boone each added six.
Fort Fairfield boys 58, Van Buren 57
At Van Buren Thursday, Watson’s 14 points led Fort Fairfield past the Crusaders.
Noah Bernard and Hunter Beaulieu both scored nine points for the Tigers.
Jake Rioux scored a game-high 40 points, including five three-point goals, to lead the Crusaders.
Fort Fairfield girls 67, Van Buren 47
Whitney McNamee and Nicole Giberson paced 5-2 Fort Fairfield with 22 points and 20 points, respectively, in a win over Van Buren Thursday.
Parise Rossignol of Van Buren led all scorers with 29 points, including four three-pointers.
Ashland girls 69, Easton 65
At Ashland Thursday, the Hornets gained their third win of the season behind Marissa Chasse, who tossed in a game-high 26 points.
Caitlin Paradis connected for 22 points for Ashland, which led at all the quarter breaks.
Buck led Easton with 18 points, while Mariah Cyr and Hannah Ferris chipped in with 15 and 12 points, respectively.
Presque Isle girls 43, Houlton 37
On New Year’s Eve in Houlton, Graham scored a game-high 18 points and Presque Isle stayed undefeated.

Ashland girls 70, GHCA 46
At UMPI Dec. 30, the Hornets raced out to a 30-6 lead on their way to a win over the Eagles.
The Hornets were led by Cody Blair’s 22 points, while teammate Tyler Chasse added 15.
GHCA girls 56, Ashland 38
The Eagles used a 19-8 third quarter to break open a close game on their way to a win over the Ashland Hornets Dec. 30 at UMPI.
Colby Walker led the Eagles with 25 points.
Paradis paced the Hornets with 15 points and Chasse added 12.
Katahdin boys 65, Central Aroostook 47
At Mars Hill Dec. 30, Wyatt Morse scored 18 points, including a 10-for-10 showing from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, as Katahdin of Stacyville topped Central Aroostook.
Chandler Brewer’s 18 points and Zack McClung’s 14 points and nine rebounds paced Central Aroostook.
Fort Fairfield girls 46, Southern Aroostook 38
At Fort Fairfield Dec. 30, the Tigers jumped out to an early 9-0 lead. McNamee and Janae Libby scored 12 and nine points, respectively, for the winners.
Washburn boys 63, Southern Aroostook 56
At Washburn, Jarrett Olson nailed six of his seven three-pointers in the first-half en route to a game-high 31 points as the Beavers defeated Southern Aroostook in a Dec. 30 contest.
Noah Caron finished with 14 for Washburn, who improved to 4-2.
