HOULTON, Maine — Time is running out for dog owners to get their pets licensed without incurring a penalty.
Friday is the final day to renew a dog license to avoid a $25 late fee, according to Houlton Town Clerk Cathy O’Leary. The state requires all dogs to be licensed after six months of age or within 10 days of ownership. Licenses expire Dec. 31 of each year. All dogs that have reached the age of 6 months must be registered.
The cost to register a dog is $11. That fee is reduced to $6 if the animal has been spayed or neutered. Those operating a kennel must purchase a $42 license for the year.
Owners must show proof of a current certificate of Maine Rabies Vaccination, and if neutered/spayed, veterinarian documentation or a previous dog license indicating the dog is neutered or spayed. If a license tag is lost during the year, a replacement can be purchased for $1.
