Aroostook League championships were decided in classic skiing last Tuesday as the Nordic Heritage Center hosted all County teams on its five-kilometer course. The Caribou Vikings were able to prevail both in the girls’ and boys’ competitions in relatively easy fashion.
For the girls, Caribou scored 16 points to defeat Fort Kent (30) and Fort Fairfield (48). Presque Isle, Madawaska and Katahdin also participated but did not have enough skiers to figure in the team scores.
Individually, Hannah Streinz of Katahdin came out on top with a time of 19 minutes and 43 seconds. Her closest competitor was Sarah Doak of the Vikings, who claimed runner-up honors with her finish in 20:10. In third place was Doak’s teammate, Lauren Chapman, who registered a time of 22:14.
To wrap up the top 10 in the event that included 29 skiers, Sarah Beaulieu of Fort Fairfield was fourth in 22:37, Fort Kent teammates Rudy Martin and Jordan Tanguay fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 23:04 and 23:29; the Caribou trio of Kendra Furber (24:18), Eileen Patton (24:46) and Sirena Cyr (24:57) the next fastest; and Chelsea Daigle of Madawaska in 10th in 25:07.
The Viking boys scored a meet-low 14 points to down Fort Kent (37), Presque Isle (43) and Madawaska (49). Fort Fairfield and Katahdin had individuals racing but not enough for a team score.
Leading the way out of the 34 racers was Katahdin’s Daniel Streinz, whose time of 16:26 was nearly two minutes faster than second-place Michael Marquis of Caribou (18:24).
Tying for third were Fort Kent’s Matt Toussaint and Caribou’s Riley McDuffie with identical times of 18:35. The Vikes’ Keith Draper was fifth in 18:37, followed by Noah Rossignol of Presque Isle (18:43), Tim Deschenes of Madawaska (19:07), Lukas Lagasse of Caribou (19:08), Tito Naranja of Fort Kent (19:27) and Gannon Therrien of Presque Isle (19:46).
The freestyle championship meet for the league took place Tuesday in Madawaska.
