Swimmers get ready for state competition

    The Wildcat swim teams will complete their season Monday and Tuesday at the Class B state championships, being held at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

    Several PI boys will be swimming individual events. Nate Dewitt, who qualified for six events, will compete in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly.
    Alex Hemphill and Matt Burtt have both chosen to swim the 100 breaststroke after qualifying in other events as well. Joshua Jones will swim the 50 freestyle and Dustin Drabek, who qualified in four different events, will do the 100 IM and the 500 freestyle.
    Both the Wildcat girls and boys will be competing in three relays at the upcoming state meet.
    Alexis Coiley of Fort Fairfield has qualified in five events and will participate in both the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle.
    At Friday’s Penobscot Valley Conference championships held at Husson University in Bangor, the PI boys came in sixth place overall with 96 points.
    Dewitt placed fifth in the 50 free in 24.78 seconds and Jones was 16th in 26.91.
    Hemphill took seventh in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.29.
    Leigh Buck came in 12th in the 200 free in 2:18.13 and Drabek was 11th in both the 200 IM (2:30.54) and the 100 back (1:08.29).
    The boys’ 400 freestyle relay team, consisting of Buck, Drabek, Hemphill and Jones, set a school record in 4:00.33.
    The Wildcat girls came in 11th place with 20 points on Saturday, also at Husson.
    Jacqueline Lambert was 15th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:26.51 and two relay teams, made up of Olivia Goulet, Sara Gilson,  Lambert and Heather Nadeau, placed ninth.
