The Caribou boys and Limestone/MSSM girls were both successful in their prelim basketball games last week and earned trips to play in the Eastern Maine quarterfinals at the new Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. The Vikings hosted Gardiner last Wednesday and looked impressive in a 67-44 victory. Caribou raced out to a 16-2 lead after a quarter and was never threatened from the point on.
Coach Chris Casavant’s team moved to 15-4 on the season behind a balanced offense which saw all five starters score at least eight points. Junior Dayne Savage led the way with 18 points, while Derek Richardson had 16. Kameron Manter, Matt Milliard and Cody Herbert all chipped in with eight.
Seth McFarland scored 17 points for the No. 13 Tigers representing the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference. Gardiner ended its season with a 9-9 record.
The No. 7 Limestone-MSSM Eagle girls had beaten Greater Houlton Christian Academy twice during the regular season and had to square off with the Eagles again last Tuesday with much more on the line.
Limestone’s Eagles also used a fast start, taking a 14-2 lead over the game’s first three minutes, to win by a 63-40 margin and improve their record to 16-3.
Melissa Cantafio scored 21 points in the win, while Chelsey Pelkey and Mariah Williams had 17 and 15, respectively. Pelkey also had 10 assists and eight steals, while Alexis Bell grabbed 10 rebounds.
Colby Walker scored 13 points for GHCA, which was seeded 10th and finished at 12-7.
