The Portage Lakers Snowmobile Club held its annual pie auction attracting a sizeable crowd of enthusiastic locals from the town and surrounding areas, as well as out-of-town riders, on the evening of Saturday, Feb. 15.

Forty pies and other baked treats were auctioned off with the players bidding high and enjoying the fun competition. The high bid of the night was for Beth Hummel’s kahlua cake. It went for $300.
Club members Adam Soucy and Glenn Cusick served as the auctioneers for the event, while the lovely Jennifer Curran, club president, was the “pie girl,” working her way around the room enticing the bidders with the sweet treats.
Club members and volunteers baked pies, cakes and other goodies to be auctioned off to raise funds for the snowmobile club. This event has become one of the favorites, with travelers even planning their sledding vacations around the event. This year’s auction raised a total of $ 3,000 — the highest to date. All funds raised will be used toward trail grooming, with this event providing two tanks of fuel!
A dance followed the event. Special thanks go out to Dean’s Motor Lodge for once again donating its facilities to the club for the auction, and to special volunteer Betty Benson for all of her efforts.

   Nashville Plantation fire

The home belonging to Perry Charette of Nashville Plantation is determined to be a “total loss” after a fire burned the home. Fire crews from several departments were dispatched to the location on the Portage Road around 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19.
Thankfully, Neither Charette, nor his wife were home at the time of the blaze. The home, built by Charette’s grandparents, was said to the second oldest home in the township. While the cause of the fire is under investigation, it is suspected a dryer in the home may be to blame.
