Easton, Washburn and Fort Kent

vie for drama title at UMFK

Three Aroostook high schools will meet in Fox Auditorium on the University of Maine at Fort Kent campus for the Class B Northern Maine Regional Drama Festival on Saturday, March 8, starting at 1 p.m. These schools will present one-act plays (maximum 40 minutes in length) for a three-judge panel and an audience of peers, parents and other interested spectators. The school with the highest rating will advance to the state finals in Yarmouth on March 21-22.

The schools will proceed in this order: Washburn, Easton and Fort Kent. Washburn, under the direction of Robin Thurston, will present “The Clown That Couldn’t Be Caught” by Darbie Koch. Easton’s entry, “Alice In Wonderland: The Urban Edition” by Burton Bumgarner, is directed by Debbie Rooney. Doug Clapp will lead the Fort Kent contingent with a production of “Opus” by Michael Hollinger. Judges for the event are Carlene Hirsch, Ann Ross and Joe Zubrick.
Tickets for the three play session are $7 for adults and $4 for high school students and younger. Tickets will be available in the Fox Auditorium lobby (Bengal’s Lair) beginning at 12:15 p.m. Patrons are encouraged to support all three schools through their attendance. The Maine Principal’s Association, sponsors on the event, stipulates that no one will be admitted to the auditorium once a performance has begun. Since the individual plays can vary greatly in length, it’s impossible to know exactly when a given production will begin. Attendees should plan their travel schedules to be sure that they are at the theater well in advance of curtain time.
