From the Bunkers

The Houlton Golf Club will officially open for business on Friday, May 9, for walkers. Superintendent Bob Gray and his crew of Ray Barton, Brian Hammond, Joe McLaughlin and Paul Madigan are working hard rolling fairways and putting the greens and course back in shape from the long hard winter. We are hoping some warm weather will dry up the course in hopes of putting carts on the course. Call ahead, please, about the use of carts. The driving range will be up and running by Thursday, May 8, weather permitting.

May will be a busy month with four important opening events occurring. The Ladies Day opening event will be held Tuesday, May 20, at 5 p.m., with a social hour followed by supper and information about this year’s play. Of special note is the New Ladies’ Twilight League format. More details about this popular event will be shared at the supper. A signup list is now in the clubhouse for the supper and Ladies’ Twilight League. Also that week, on Thursday, May 22, will be the first Men’s Supper of the year, brought to you by Greg Palmer and Paul Madigan. The Men’s Twilight League informational meeting, with some rule changes, will be at 7 p.m. on May 22. Signup for the Men’s Twilight League is happening now at the clubhouse, so get your team on the list now. Deadline for the Men’s Twilight League signup is May 29 with a limit of 30 teams.
The annual Memorial Tournament will be played on Saturday, May 31. The four-person scramble will be an 18-hole event this year with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Hamburgers and hot dogs from the grill will be available before golf. Get your foursome ready and sign up now. If you don’t have a group, sign up anyway and we will help you find a group. We are looking for a full field for this inaugural 2014 golf event. All proceeds go towards the beautification projects and gardens around the course.
The Ladies’ Association is sponsoring this event and asks anyone who has a loved one to be remembered for our memorial, to stop by the clubhouse and put the name on our memorial board, or call the clubhouse for details.
