Farmers’ Market: Vive la Difference!

There is a tendency among humans to form clans, bonding with others similar to ourselves. Our greatest comfort levels are with the familiar. Sameness feels safe. These people are those in whom we invest resources and with whom we associate regularly.
Members of the Presque Isle Farmers’ Market have a number of similarities in terms of choices we make in life, or at least in terms of making a living. We share an enthusiasm for the outdoors and for playing in the dirt. We remain committed to making positive environmental choices since we live where we work. We are a clan.
On the other hand, the human species is also attracted to novelty — we seek out new experiences and variety in our lives. We actively seek opportunities to interact with others who are different. Differences may include race, religion, ethnicity, culture, or outlook on life. We can learn from the experiences of others via interaction with those individuals. Some would call this “living vicariously;” some would just call this “life.”
Differences are found in the details of members’ stories … each farm has its own business plan; each member has his or her own approach. We may plant seeds each spring or encourage perennials. We may recycle plants through livestock as meat, milk, and eggs. Our vocation or avocation most likely includes combinations of these things, stories within stories.
Getting to know venders is part of the fun for regular Farmers’ Market customers. Getting to know our customers is part of the fun for Market members. Sharing expands our clan. Join us on any Saturday morning in the Aroostook Centre Mall parking lot for good food, good stories and good friends.
