HOULTON, Maine — Soaring temperatures and a power outage were among the highlights of the 2014 Little Miss/Mr. Sparkler and Firecracker pageant last Wednesday at the Gentle Memorial Building.
“It was a very interesting evening,” said Jane Torres, executive director for the Greater Houlton Area Chamber of Commerce. “We managed to complete the judging by using the flashlights on our cell phones. Since we didn’t know when the power would come back on we had to move things along somehow.”
The pageants were traditionally held in conjunction with Houlton’s State Agricultural Fair celebration at the park, but fair organizers opted not to continue the popular event. Not wanting to see a tradition die off, the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce has held the pageant for the third year and decided to have the event kick-off the busy holiday celebration.
The following youngsters were crowned during the evening.
Sparkler Girls (up to age 2) — 1, Valentina Alvarado; 2, Lena Bennett; and 3, Ondine Beaton.
Sparkler Boys (up to age 2) — 1, Grayzun Deveau; 2, Ryder Matson; and 3, Logan Bulley.
Firecracker Girls (ages 3-4) — 1, Presley Goodwin; 2, Sophia Sprague; and 3 (tie), Kennedy and Kenley Deveau.
Firecracker Boys (ages 3-4) — 1, Logan Guertin; 2, William McCarthy; and 3, Garrison Albert.
