The Houlton Ultimate Summer League (HUSL) has finished week three of games. Each team is sponsored by a local business and a recap of games is as follows:
“GCD took advantage of a young and learning Bond team,” said Chris Rines, organizer of Ultimate Houlton. “The first half was very close, but the Bonds came up short in the second half and couldn’t match GCD.”
In the second game, WHOU was facing a depleted roster, with only one regular starter with its bench players, along with one fill-in player. They had no substitutes.
“They were happy scoring the three points that they did against a well coached RAC team,” Rines added.
In the first week, Goetsch Custom Designs faced WHOU in the opening contest. This game started off in favor of Goetsch Custom Design, with three initial points. But WHOU answered back with three back-to-back points to tie it up. From then on points went back and forth between the teams to keep it even and suspenseful. Finally, with time running down, a “soft cap” was called, which means whoever currently has the most points, the next team to score two points above the point they’re at wins, explained Rines.
The game was tied at five points apiece, so the first team to reach a total of seven points would win. With 10 more minutes of playing time, it was tied again at six points, but a “hard cap” was forced, meaning the next point wins. It was a tough, hard fought battle, but GCD ended up coming up with the winning point in the end over WHOU to make it 7-6.
In the second game and final match of the week, the Bond Family Mercantile took on Rent-A-Center in another hard-fought battle. Things went back and forth between these two teams in the first half. In the second half, Bond Family Mercantile kept the lead, though team RAC gave them a run for their money. In the end, it was Bond Family Mercantile with a final score of 9-6.
In each team’s second game of the season, GCD took a sizeable lead over RAC, as experience led the team to victory. Rines noted that “a lot of drive and effort kept team Rent-A-Center pugnacious to win.” After an hour of playing time, “soft cap” was called, and with GCD at eight points, the next team to reach 10 would win. The final score was 10-4.
