PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A fire mid-afternoon on Aug. 12 caused damage to the southern side of a Main Street apartment building.

The Presque Isle Fire Department received a report around 3:40 p.m. indicating a fire at 205 Main St.
“We were able to extinguish the fire before it caused a great deal of damage. The blaze was contained to the exterior of the structure on the south side of the building, next to a second-floor apartment entrance,” said Chief Darrell White, PIFD.
The building is owned by Gary Nelson and had at least one apartment rented, with a couple living in the second-story unit. Damage was estimated at about $5,000.
White said the fire was a result of “human error” and no charges are pending.
“The fire was unintentional and was the result of improper disposal of smoking materials,” said White.
A total of 20 fire personnel and six trucks responded to the call. Firefighters cleared the scene about an hour later. Traffic was briefly delayed in the area, as crews worked to put out the fire.
