Balloon Fest 5K scheduled Sunday

A five-kilometer road race is scheduled for Sunday as part of the Crown of Maine Balloon Fest.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the Forum in Presque Isle. The walk begins at 9:15 a.m. and the timed race and untimed run will get underway at 10 a.m. at the main entrance of the Forum.
The fee to register is $10, with shirts given to the first 20 registrants. Medals will be awarded to the overall female and male winners as well as winner in three divisions (under 12 years old, 12-18 and over 18).

The race is being put on by the Aroostook Teen Leadership Camp, a leadership development and drug prevention program of Aroostook Mental Health Services, Inc., which has been serving teenagers of Aroostook County since 1987.

Season tickets on sale at PIHS

    Presque Isle High School soccer season tickets are now available to purchase in the SAD 1 athletics office. The cost is $35. Office hours are 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, call 764-6507.

Race winners at August Festival 3K

        The Washburn August Festival’s three-kilometer road race was held Saturday, with Elijah Verhoff of Caribou winning the men’s title in 10 minutes and 21 seconds and Marie Beckum, also of Caribou, crossing the finish line in 11:15 for the overall women’s championship.

Viking Run set on Labor Day

    The annual Aroostook Federal Saving and Loan Viking Run will be held at the Caribou High School track on Monday, Sept. 1 at 9 a.m.
Registration for the 10 different children’s races begins at 8 a.m. Runners from age 2 through the eighth grade are encouraged to participate. Pre-K and kindergarten runners compete in a quarter-mile run. Grades 1-2 and 3-4 run a half mile, while grades 5-6 and 7-8 run one mile.
There will be trophies for the top three male and female finishers in each race. Ribbons and T-shirts will be awarded to all the young athletes who take part.

Legends tour makes stop at Spud

    CARIBOU — The NELCAR Legends Tour made a stop at Spud Speedway Saturday to join seven other divisions of racing.
Mathew Bourgoine of Newport beat out Wyatt Alexander of Ellsworth and Matt Grant of Windham for the top spot for the legends.
In the Northern Lights, Ian Rasmussen of New Denmark, New Brunswick bested Shawn Dewley of Presque Isle and Galen Morrow of Limestone for the checkered flag.
The street stock division went to Jeff Willette of Presque Isle, with Jon Dixon of PI and JR Howlett of Mapleton following.
The fast fours winner was Nate Haney of Caribou, with Connor Thibeau of Fort Fairfield and Steve Levesque of Blaine taking second and third, respectively.
Glenn Rasmussen of New Denmark was first for outlaw sportsmen. Thibeau was the runner-up and Robert Tomlinson of Arthurette, New Brunswick came in third.
For kids karts, Gage Theriault of Limestone won, with Ryder Leavitt of Fort Fairfield second and Isaac Rossignol of New Denmark third.
Damian Theriault of Caribou won the junior champ karts race, with Landen Leavitt of Fort Fairfield taking second.
For senior champ karts, Alexander took the top spot, followed by Tyler Raymond of Caribou and Tom Hale of Westmanland.
This Saturday, Aug. 23, is the Speedway 95 Invitational. A full card of racing is planned in all classes.
