Ashland hires new athletic director

Ashland District School has someone new in charge of its athletic programs.

Ty Thurlow, who taught and coached at Central Aroostook Junior-Senior High School during the 2013-14 season, was hired to replace Joel Hall, who has assumed the principal job at Ashland.
Thurlow coached the Panther boys’ soccer team a year ago.
His successor as coach is Cody Tompkins. The 2012 Easton High School graduate has experience coaching at the sub-varsity level in the area and last season served as the girls’ varsity basketball coach at Hodgdon.
“He came highly recommended by the other schools that he has coached at,” said SAD 42 Athletic Director Ryan Guerrette. “He has a passion for coaching and great enthusiasm when he talks about coaching. He is very prepared and his practices plans are comprehensive and organized.”
The Fort Fairfield Tigers have a familiar face in charge of the girls’ varsity soccer team. Tom Towle, who is the longtime recreation director for the town, replaces Kerrie Alley, who took a teaching position in New Hampshire. Towle has served as Alley’s assistant for the last few seasons and is also a veteran soccer official.
Mike Waugh, who coached the Washburn Beavers to a girls’ state cross country championship in 2012, has taken a teaching position at Presque Isle High School and will serve as the Wildcats’ girls coach this season. He replaces Lori Googins.
Taking Waugh’s place as the XC coach in Washburn is Andy Churchill.
This winter, a couple of new coaches take over varsity basketball programs in the area. Cody Closson, a former player at the school, has been hired as the boys’ coach at Fort Fairfield after veteran coach Todd Alley’s contract was not renewed. Also, Bryan Shaw will replace Bob Doar as the girls’ coach in Easton. Shaw, a former Central Aroostook Panther player, is in his second year as a physical education teacher for the Easton school department.
