Bartley sixth in PVCs, Beavers take Countys
At a cross country meet held Saturday in Bucksport, Penobscot Valley Conference titles were up for grabs. The Presque Isle teams made the trip, with the girls placing fifth out of eight teams and the boys sixth out of nine.
Jason Bartley had the Wildcats’ top finish of the day, completing the three-mile course in 18 minutes and 33.22 seconds, good for sixth place overall out of 100 male competitors.
Also for Presque Isle, Cristian Nunez was 47th in 20:23.92, Dustin Alward 57th in 20:42.44 and James Churchill 68th in 21:22.26.
Caribou won the large school meet and Orono was tops among small schools. The individual boys’ champion was John Hassett of George Stevens Academy, who crossed the line in 17:15.07.
The PI girls were led by Mandy Graham, who was 16th out of 89 runners in 21:54.26. Teammate Emily Colligan took the 39th position in 23:59.91 and Isabelle Jackson was 43rd in 24:07.66.
The team champs were MDI for large schools and Orono for small schools. Individually, Caroline Driscoll of MDI prevailed in 19:54.51.
Last Wednesday, the region’s small schools met for the Aroostook League championship, hosted by Fort Kent.
The Washburn girls bested Houlton for the title, while on the boys’ side, Fort Kent finished well ahead of the Beavers.
Individual championships went to Rylee Warman of Houlton for girls (22:55.7) and Matthew Toussaint of Fort Kent for boys (17:06.13). A total of 21 girls and 20 boys competed on the three-mile course.
Emilia Churchill came in second for the girls and led the Beavers with a time of 22:35.74. Joan Overman was fourth in 23:59.11 and Marianne Helton seventh in 24:50.18 to help the Beavers to a total of 24 points — seven better than the Shires.
The Warrior boys scored 19 points, compared to 38 by the Beavers. Following Toussaint and taking second place was Derek Baker of Washburn in 18:03.38. Also cracking the overall top-10 for the Beavers was Devon Maynard, who was eighth in 20:05.41.
Next up for Aroostook County’s cross country teams are the Eastern Maine championships, to be held Saturday in Belfast.
