Children credited with saving home
WASHBURN, Maine — A fire on the Cross Road Nov. 5, 2014 was blamed on an overheated chimney.
“Washburn Fire & Rescue received a call to respond to a structure fire at 32 Cross Rd. at 10:24 a.m. on Wednesday. Crews responded to find smoke and fire coming from the attic area surrounding a pellet stove chimney,” said Troy Heald, chaplain and spokesperson for the WFD.
Heald said a fire crew gained access to the attic and quickly extinguished the fire.
“There is some smoke and water damage to the home, but it was a very good save,” said Assistant Chief Gregg Sperrey. “The crews responded quickly and prevented the home from being damaged further.”
Sperrey credits children living across the road — who were home from school — for their quick response once they noticed trouble at their neighbor’s home.
“They did what was right and called 9-1-1 immediately to report the fire,” said Sperrey.
The resident was not home when fire broke out, but two dogs that were in the home at the time were removed from the residence by firefighters and were unharmed. The home is insured and should be able to be repaired, noted Heald. Washburn Fire & Rescue were assisted at the scene by the Mapleton Fire Department and Crown Ambulance. No injuries were reported.
