Spanish American monument — The huge granite boulder for the Spanish War Veterans Monument was placed at the park last week, weighing four and a half tons and came from the Bither farm in Linneus.
Jefferson Society organized — At an enthusiastic meeting of local Democrats Friday evening, a National Jefferson Society was organized for the purpose of honoring the memory and patriotism of Thomas Jefferson; officers elected were: president, Aaron A. Putnam; vice president, Charles Carroll; Treasurer, Leonard A. Pierce and secretary, Albert K. Stetson.

Home for the holidays — Miss Doris Alward, a student at Burdett Business College in Boston, is visiting her mother Mrs. Annie Alward, Market Square. Christian B. Hall, a student at the Kirksville (Mo) College of Osteopathy and Surgery, is spending the recess with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Hall, Mechanic street. Miss Ethelyn Cowperthwaite who teaches at Norway High School is vacationing at her home here.
Roller rink is ‘hopping’ — A new heating system has been installed at the Houlton Roller Skating Rink and more and more skaters have been enjoying the new form of recreation in Houlton. A midnight dance will usher in the new year at the rink beginning at 12:01 Monday morning until four o’clock.

Switch from Latin to English — The traditional Christmas Eve service at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church will be given partly in English, rather than Latin, for the first time this year. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Michael F. Tierney said the use of English is in keeping with changes being made in other Catholic churches.

COFFEE SHOP SERVICE — Mrs. Percy Hoar pours coffee for three persons who help to keep the Coffee Shop at the Aroostook Medical Center operating efficiently. They include, from left, Mrs. Ruel Crawford, Mrs. Herman Estabrook and Mrs. J.E. Millar. The lunch counter is the project of the Free Bed and Aid Association of the hospital.Sherman’s McDonald retires from B&A — Frederick M. McDonald, a veteran Bangor and Aroostook station agent has retired after 45 years of service with the road, with 28 of those years spent at Sherman. McDonald began his railroad career as an operator for the B&A October 3, 1919. He is married and has three sons and one daughter.

SACS welcomes new teachers — Three new teachers have been hired by the Southern Aroostook Community School District, according to Superintendent Bruce Parsons. James Shaw of Mars Hill was hired to teach science and math, Lois Flewelling joined the grade 4 elementary staff and Diane Langworthy of Houlton was elected elementary consulting teacher.
Playground fundraising underway — The Houlton Parks and Recreation Department, along with a citizens’ committee, is looking forward to building a new $45,000 playground structure at Houlton Community Park.
