Lucky and Liza are the Halfway Home Pet Rescue Pets of the Week. Lucky is a spayed female 6-month-old feral offspring of Liza, who is an approximately 18-month-old spayed female. Both are very defensive as they have not have any positive human contact in their lifetime. Volunteers with HPPR will keep the feral cats until spring to see if it is possible to tame them. President of the HHPR Norma Milton explained that in April, if the cats have decided to distrust humans, they will be offered to an area farmer as a spayed barn cat to serve as rodent patrol. “Taming a feral cat is a long and patient process and quite often the older cats will choose to remain feral,” Milton explained. Being spayed and relocated to a farmer’s barn ensures the cat will have a warm shelter in his straw, but in return, the cat maintains a rodent-free, poison-free environment for the farmer’s animals and family. “There is no adoption fee for the barn cat but the farmer must take two at a time and promise access to food and water at least once daily.” Milton also said that the HHPR has been asked to trap the feral colony of 16 cats located on Veronica Street in Caribou on Thursday, Jan. 22. Residents on Veronica and South Park streets are asked to keep their owned cats inside from Wednesday, Jan. 21 until Friday, Jan. 30 while there is active trapping in the area.
