WEGP off the air, sale negotiations underway

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine Negotiations for the sale of WEGP (1390AM) are currently underway with a potential buyer.

According to WEGP’s website (www.wegp.net), the station has ceased broadcasting, and will remain off the air until the station is sold, and resumes broadcasting under new ownership.
“The buyers have asked us not to disclose who they are,” said Bryan Lawrence, former operations manager at WEGP.
The station went off the air Feb. 28. A message to listeners on the website notes that “many of the programs we have broadcast over the years can be heard online.”
Recognizing that the closing of the sale takes time, and has to be approved by the Federal Communications Commission, Lawrence said he wasn’t sure when the radio station would be up and running.
“People need to understand that it’s not necessarily going to be the same programming that was on previously,” said Lawrence. “The call letters will remain the same, but the content will likely be different.”
The website’s message thanks listeners for their support.
“The station owner and staff thank you — our listeners and advertisers — for your faithful support of talk radio over the years, and wish each one the best,” read the message.
WEGP has served the central Aroostook market since 1960. From Aug. 1, 2010 to July 31, 2013, the AM station was owned and operated by Greg McNeil, president of Northern Maine Broadcasting. The more recent owner was Paul Decelles, president of Decelles-Smith Media, Inc. McNeil effectively transferred ownership to Decelles Aug. 1, 2013.
