Poliquin on the right track with guns

To the editor:
I was happy to read Congressman Bruce Poliquin’s recent letter titled, “Protecting our right to keep, bear arms.” The congressman is correct in noting that Maine ranks consistently among the lowest states for violent crime, while also ranking among the highest states for gun ownership/ proliferation. I was happy to see him quote the text of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution as well.

Like our U.S. Constitution, the Maine Constitution also protects the right to keep and bear arms, stating, “Every citizen has the right to keep and bear arms and this right shall never be questioned” (Article 1, Section 16). Sadly, extremely wealthy individuals from away, like Michael Bloomberg, have already stated that Maine is in their sights for 2016.
Bloomberg’s gun control group is hoping to enact new gun control measures in Maine on the 2016 ballot, using a people’s referendum. It is vitally important that we stop outside interests from interfering in our state. Mega-millionaires from New York City and Chicago should learn to stop lecturing Mainers about guns when their own cities are exponentially more dangerous than our state.
Always remember that, for these fat cats, “gun control” is really only about one thing — control.
