The Snowdogs are back from another memorable trip to the Special Olympics state basketball tournament.
The Blue team won the Silver medal in Div. I and the White team won the bronze medal in Div. 2. Coach Brian Hamel said there was some great and very stiff competition this year, with three more teams added to the field of competitors.
OHI of Bangor won the gold in both divisions. The Blue team was on the verge of not making the championship game, but down by a point with 30 seconds left, stole the ball to set up a chance. After a time-out, Austin Hanson fed Jeff Heath with a pass and his show with five seconds left won the game and send the team to the finals. Hamel called it “the most exciting game of the tournament.”
“I was so proud of the 27 Snowdogs who made this three-day trip April 3-5, along with 16 coaches/support staff, The trip was made possible by donations from so many generous donors in our community,” Hamel said. “I counted 50 Snowdogs supporters that traveled from The County to Gorham to support the Snowdogs. It is my privilege and honor to be the Snowdogs’ head coach.”
